How to Review Your Japanese Flashcards

Why we do this

The app shows you a card again just before you forget it. This is how words stay in your head for a long time. It only works if you do it every day.

Every day

  1. Review every day, even if it is only 10 minutes. Do it at the same time each day, like right after class.

When a card comes up

  1. Answer before you flip the card. Say the answer out loud or write it, then check.
  2. Be honest. If you were wrong, or you took a long time, press "Again." Do not press "Good" just to feel better.
  3. Say the word out loud every time. If the card has audio, listen to it. The JFT-Basic test has listening parts.

Your mistake notebook

  1. Keep a notebook beside you. Write only the cards you got wrong: the word, the reading, and the meaning. Writing by hand helps you remember kana and kanji.
  2. Once a week, read your notebook. Rewrite the words that keep coming back.

If a card is too hard

  1. If you keep getting the same card wrong, make it easier. Draw a small picture, make a funny story, or split it into smaller cards.

Use what you learn

  1. Make your own sentences with new words. Practice speaking with a classmate. Flashcards help you remember, and speaking helps you use the words.

If you miss some days

Don't panic. Do not try to finish all the reviews in one day. Do a small batch each day until you catch up. Do not add new cards until then.
